Our Reading program focuses on teaching each child learning skills and on building his/her vocabulary. We have found that by focusing on phonics, word study and fluency, and vocabulary, students achieve higher test results in standardized testing and generally do better in the everyday classroom setting.
Our tutorial sessions focus on the Reading skills which the FCAT tests:
- Word comparisons
- Cause/effect relationships
- Determining main ideas
- Plots and author’s purposes
- Reference and research
Our students also work on Comprehension skills by using simple stories to practice:
- Using context clues
- Predicting and summarizing sequencing
- Making inferences
Since vocabulary is also a key part of mastering Reading and Comprehension skills, we offer instruction on phonics and teach children how to focus on vowel and consonant sounds to simplify the understanding of long words. Tutorial sessions also include a focus on vocabulary development, fluency (rate, phrasing, expression), and writing.
